Thank you dear Sir for sharing this valuable information on traditional Japanese Katana etc. upkeep. It was so valuable to me as me and my wife are just buying our first swords. Although I found a few for over a thousand dollars US that we thought seemed nice. I am not educated enough to really make an accurate choice. So many on eBay sell beautiful (but in my opinion) probably not ideal for actual defense if (GOD forbid) that necessity arose. Now of course I am already adept at shooting guns but guns run out of ammunition and if we found ourselves in a different world soon we want to have something like the Katana to help with defense. We are going to train with wooden Bokken and I will do my best. We take this very seriously but also we continue to move with joy and peace in our hearts always. If you have any advice for our first sword purchase or anything at all we are most definitely listening intently. May GOD bless you exceedingly abundantly beyond all you see or imagine. And may God bless your house. And increase you in all you have. Thank you sincerely your friend (from and living in Florida) Aaron.

In reply to Grommet's Leathercraft.

Baldric or any king of sling is not worn with a katana (aside from movies or TV). A saya (scabbard) is recommended of course with any bladed weapon. You can tie a sageo (decorative cord) on the scabbard, which can be used to fasten the scabbard to the hakama.

This video explains how to tie and wear it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p97lchaJ-xo

This has been very informative. I didn't know that you were supposed to use oil at least once every three months. Just a question, is it necessary to purchase a baldric for your sword?
